Pupusas are round, filled corn tortillas fried on a plancha grill plate. They are served with a white cabbage salad (curtido) and a spicy tomato sauce. In El Salvador, the pupusa’s homeland, life without pupusas is inconceivable. That’s why you can buy pupusas on any street corner at any time of the day or night. Due to the popularity of the national dish, it was even granted a national holiday in its honour in 2005 (El Día Nacional de las Pupusas). However, you don’t have to go to El Salvador to eat delicious pupusas. They have also made their way into neighbouring Central American countries and the USA, where their fan base is growing and growing.
Thanks to El Volcancito, the round delicacies are now also available in Switzerland. The most popular pupusa is the pupusa mixta, which is filled with meat, bean purée and cheese. All three ingredients are prepared separately and contain different vegetables and spices. The recipe? It’s a secret! We can only say this much: El Volcancito only buys its meat and vegetables from reputable Swiss suppliers, and the pupusas are freshly prepared in Switzerland.
In addition to the pupusa mixta, El Volcancito Catering also offers pupusas with cheese filling. And for lovers of spicy dishes, El Volcancito has a cheese, courgette and chilli filling on its menu. In the spring we offer an exclusive Swiss version with cheese and wild garlic. For vegans, we have a pupusa with bean purée.
Good to know: Pupusas are gluten-free, very light and children love them. The pupusas are fried at the event itself – you can see it being done, and you certainly won’t get bored. El Volcancito uses a special round plancha grill to prepare them. The on-site preparation also ensures that everything can be eaten fresh, crispy and hot. A lot of guests try their first pupusa out of curiosity, the second because they want more and the third because they love them – bon appétit!
But why are pupusas so well received? The crispy corn shell is the perfect base for the intense taste sensation provided by the filling. The white cabbage salad and the tomato sauce round off the delicious feast. All in all: La combinación perfecta!
